Building your resilience basket
Embodiment is one of the tools I use to help people change their lives. One of the first steps we take towards embodied regulation is building a resilience basket. But what exactly is resilience?
Resilience is the ability to bounce back from adversity, stress, and trauma. Resilience is not avoiding difficult experiences, but learning how to navigate them in a way that allows us to grow and thrive. An integral part of healing, resilience allows us to react differently in the same circumstances. It allows us to get back up and keep moving forward, even when things are hard. Resilience allows us to thrive and become empowered, even through trauma.
When we experience stress, trauma, or other challenging life events, our nervous systems can become dysregulated. This dysregulation can cause us to react in ways that are survival mechanisms and patterns that have been etched into our minds since we were children. This can lead to a variety of physical, emotional, and psychological symptoms, such as anxiety, depression, chronic pain, and relationship problems.
Building a resilience basket is a process of discovery whereby we uncover and gather the resources and tools that best help us to regulate our nervous systems and cope with stress in a healthy way. These resources can include things like:
Physical practices: such as exertive exercise, yoga, meditation, and breathwork
Emotional practices: such as journaling, coaching, and offloading
Social practices: such as spending time with loved ones, volunteering, and connecting with nature
Spiritual practices: such as ritual, prayer, meditation, and mindfulness
Embodied self-regulation is a practice that can help us to connect with our bodies and regulate our nervous systems in a deeply felt way. Coming out of the stories in our heads, and into the feeling in our body is necessary for deep regulation. Together, we can find what lands best in your body as a tool to put into your resiliency basket, and we practice accessing the tools and fortifying your resilience.
Building a resilience basket and developing embodied self-regulation tools is an ongoing process. It's about cultivating a deep sense of self-awareness and learning how to respond to life's challenges with grace and strength. By investing in ourselves and learning how to regulate our nervous systems, we can take a powerful step toward creating a more fulfilling and connected life.
If you're feeling overwhelmed or unsure where to start, know that you don't have to do it alone. As an embodiment and relationship coach, I can help you explore your unique needs, identify practices that resonate with you, and guide you on your journey toward greater resilience and well-being.
